“Give and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put in your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:38
Have you ever felt like you’ve given too much? It could be in a relationship, at your workplace, or serving others. You might have felt depleted, unappreciated, and emotionally exhausted. I know that feeling.
I love to give my time, skills, and even finances. But sometimes, I feel like I am giving too much and not receiving the same in return.
What does it really mean to give too much? It starts when we begin to compare—comparing what we give with what we receive. The Apostle Paul wisely advised in 2 Corinthians 10:12, “But they measuring themselves by themselves and comparing themselves among themselves are not wise.”
When we compare, we lose sight of the blessings we’ve received and limit our resources.
How can we become unrepentant givers?
Something to note is that we should give because God has blessed us. Colossians 3:23 says, “And whatever you do, do it heartily as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”
We give because we have been blessed abundantly by God. It’s not about what we receive in return. It’s about expressing gratitude for what God has done for us.
When we feel like we’ve given all of ourselves and there’s nothing left, the key is to switch the channel, not cut off the flow. Instead of asking, “I’ve given enough; when can I receive?” we should ask, “Where is the next place to give?”
We give to become who God wants us to be. Even if we don’t see tangible results, the growth and experience we gain are invaluable. Our affirmation comes from God, not from people.
“I give and never stop giving through Christ, who strengthens me.”
If you feel exhausted from giving too much, take it to God in prayer. Tell Him how you feel and ask Him about the next channel you must focus on. There is wisdom in giving, and when we depend on the Holy Spirit, He directs us on how best to give in every season of our lives.
So, I encourage you: don’t stop giving. Don’t stop giving your time, resources, skills, and gifts. Stay empowered through Christ who strengthens you. Remember, abundance is not just about money; God has blessed you with gifts, time, and skills that cannot be exhausted.
So, ask, “Who needs to receive from this abundance within me?” Keep the flow going, and don’t let negative experiences stop you from being all God has created you to be.
