There was a time when I couldn’t give this instruction to those I led. Not because I didn’t have good qualities worth emulating, but because the self-critical side of me glorified my weaknesses and downplayed my strengths.
It was ironic because all my life, I was raised as the firstborn son who should be an example for his siblings.
As God started His work in me, my focus shifted. I realised that I was too hard on myself.
Paul said this, not because he thought he was perfect, but because he knew that he did something right by intentionally living like Christ.
Do you feel so imperfect that you stop yourself from being regarded as a mentor to others?
We are all imperfect. But we can also be examples for others – the good and the bad.
You may have started mentoring others, or you haven’t done it before. Whatever the case, remember that you are more than you think you are.
Hack Your BODY
How can we overlook our imperfections and mentor others at work?
Before leaving my previous church, I gave a farewell charge to the departments I led. I stated that I wasn’t perfect, but also shared the parts of my work ethic that I knew would help them get results.
I was mind blown, and still am, by how they now push themselves to deliver, imbibing what I had advised, even after I have left.
God had told me one year prior that this would happen, but I didn’t understand it until I left.
And I’ve realised that sometimes leaders get frustrated when those they lead prove too stubborn to follow their example.
But guess what? Many times, such people rise to the occasion after the leader has gone. I’ve seen this many times.
So, if you feel you’re not making an impact through the work you do, be patient. See the good in others while you are there. Pray for them to be empowered when you’re gone.
There is enough of God’s spirit to go around.
