During my final days in secondary school, I went with some classmates to a bar outside the school premises.
On getting there, we all sat down, and they ordered beer. When asked what I wanted, one of them said, “Just give him water. He doesn’t drink,” and they laughed.
I remember that day because of how I felt. I drank my water and kept looking at them as they giggled and talked.
I share this story because it’s an example of being persecuted for what you believe is right. I don’t have anything against drinking, but I don’t do it because it doesn’t align with my values, and I don’t like the consequences.
People will mock you for being different.
They will call you names because you refuse to join them.
They will push you aside because being around you doesn’t make them retain their status.
And in all this, we’re supposed to still treat them with love.
This doesn’t mean everything in your life should be boring. Standing for what is right will also attract other people with similar values who find what you do cool and exciting.
Stay where God has placed you. Act right, and He promises that you will experience and enjoy His kingdom, regardless of how you are treated.
That is a worthy gift.

How can we stay true to our Christian values at work?
The world is changing. Our environment gradually forces us to tone down on what we believe.
What do we then do?
Should we ignore the new laws of the land and be vocal anyway?
Or should we conform?
Neither.
I believe we can always ask God to help us keep our values in such times.
There are people we work with who want what we have. He always creates opportunities for them to meet us and encounter Him.
We can be expectant for such experiences, even as we do the work we are called to do daily.
A simple prayer, saying, “Lord, who do you want me to bless today,” can direct our steps in the right direction.
There are times when we can be persecuted for what we believe. In such times, He gives us the wisdom to navigate the seasons and environments.
It is possible to stay true to our values at work. But we must receive direction daily on how this can be done in this fast-changing clime.

We make a difference in the lives of others when we live out our values and standards. By being God’s representatives on earth, we become lighthouses to help others navigate.
