“I have learned this secret… I can be happy when I have plenty of things, and also when I have nothing.” Philippians 4:12 EASY
In my study of how the subconscious mind works, I have learned that you can influence your emotions and how you react. I started reading up on this again because I noticed I had almost no control over how I felt. Whenever I feel sad, I let it decide every other event. The same thing for when I feel happy.
With the kind of control and self-discipline that we can have, I knew there had to be a way. Previously, I also believed that once you do something you’re passionate about, you’ll always be happy. That is also false.
It’s possible to do work you really love and still feel sad because of a milestone you didn’t hit. You can hate your job and yet have moments of intense happiness because of the result you achieved. This is because work doesn’t exist in isolation.
With the several factors that can influence our emotions, it’s important to train yourself on how to gain mastery over your mind. What you believe in will always influence the actions you take.
What makes you happy? Is it in the things you own or in the ability you have to get more of those things repeatedly? Is it in the paycheck you receive or that you’re even privileged to receive a salary?
There was a time I created a design on my PC, but the file got corrupted. I got so sad that my dad noticed and asked why. After telling him, he said, “there’s no need to feel bad about it. If you did it before, you can do it again, and this time you’ll be faster and better.” Suddenly the sadness I felt got replaced with relief and because I believed it, I did the design faster and better than the first attempt.
We have control over the happiness or sadness we feel as we work. Learning how to influence them is beyond the context of this post. But understand that you have the power.
