“You’re going to wear yourself out—and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself.” Exodus 18:18 NLT
You can be at the centre of God’s will for your life, doing what He wants you to do and reaching those you’ve been sent to, but through the wrong methods.
These wrong methods eventually make you question whether God is leading you or you’re leading yourself. It almost always leads to the question, “Lord, am I still on track?”
Our experiences and existing knowledge bank often influence the methods we use. We follow how we’ve seen it done until we receive superior wisdom. This was the case with Moses.
He was “kept busy” all day settling disputes and teaching. Jethro, wiser in such matters, knew at first glance that the method was wrong.
This shows that Jethro’s visit wasn’t a coincidence. We all have that Jethro who knows what we don’t. May we recognise them when they arrive.
How can we ensure we’re doing God’s work the right way?
Every day, we are responsible for seeking our daily bread—the nourishment we need for the day in all aspects of our lives, including mental and spiritual.
Instead of praying for strength to expend energy implementing wrong methods, we need wisdom to apply inherent and acquired knowledge correctly. Without this, we will be kept busy doing everything and nothing simultaneously.
This wisdom can come from the place of prayer, through inspiration dropped in our hearts, or from advice given to us by someone more experienced.
It will only come if we remain aware of our shortcomings and teachable enough to accept them. If Moses had told Jethro that he’d instead stick to what he knew, he might have had a lower quality of life.
Sometimes, it takes me months to realise the lack of wisdom I had operated on. Other times, I work with wisdom almost immediately after I get started. No matter how long it takes, the testimony is that I will eventually find a better way to get things done.
Never settle for your current methods. There’s always a better way to get things done that you’re unaware of. Keep learning.

God wants to do exceptional work through us and sends resources to steer us in the right direction. Let’s be open to recognising and receiving such resources when they arrive.
