“Your word I have treasured and stored in my heart, That I may not sin against You.” Psalms 119:11 AMP
I have kept offence and bitterness in my heart such that whenever I saw the person who was at fault, I got angry. I have also kept love in my heart so that I can show love and kindness when the opportunity presents itself.
The heart is like an ever-expandable balloon that can store whatever we put in it, whether positive or negative. The way others know what we have kept in our hearts is by what comes out of our mouths and shows in our actions.
What if we decided to focus the content of our hearts on God instead? The author of this Psalm understood that if he chooses to keep God’s work in his heart, everything that comes out would only express God’s love. And with that, there’s no way sin would be part of it.
Don’t forget if God has told you something about your life, future, work, or family, either through the scripture or verbally. Write it down somewhere, and let it be a compass to guide you as you live each day to please Him.
How can we store God’s word as a treasure in our hearts so it guides our work?
As long as we rise from the bed and go out finding expression for what God has placed in us, we’re working. For something that takes up so much of our waking hours, it will always demand decisions and reactions from us.
When a client attempts to ruin your day, a vendor almost tarnishes your integrity, or a team member is unwilling to meet expectations, these experiences will draw out from the treasure in our hearts.
If we don’t have God’s word, we’ll act based on whatever we have kept in our hearts, eventually doing what God would not have us do.
But when we are intentional about spending time with God, memorizing scriptures and seeking to understand God’s word, it will define our default reactions over time until we start taking subconscious actions that align with God’s will.
Since it is God’s will that you do exceptional work and become what He wants you to be, you’ll see that happen.
“I understand that the content of my heart defines my actions. From today, I will assess my actions and intentionally change what I treasure the most by doing the following…”
What we treasure is defined by what we take in through our five senses. All the information received through the eyes, ears, mouth, skin and nose becomes the content that defines our actions.
As part of your action plan, list out what you will stop taking in and replace it with only what empowers you positively.
