“If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall fall on me,’ even the night shall be light about me. Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from you, but the night shines as the day. The darkness and the light are both alike to you.” Psalm 139:11–12 NKJV
As a child, I was afraid of the dark. I believe most children are, initially. As a parent, my toddler would cry at the top of her voice when the power goes out. However, as she grew older, our reassurances that we were there with her started to ease her fears. She learned to recognise that, even in the dark, she was not alone. Eventually, instead of crying, she would calmly call out for us or simply acknowledge that the light had gone.
This simple experience with my daughter made me reflect on how we often feel lost and afraid in the darkest times of our lives. We cry out, wondering if God is still there and questioning why certain things are happening. However, the anchor scripture reminds us that even in our darkest moments, God is there, and the darkness is not hidden from Him. He sees everything clearly, just as we were able to find our daughter in the dark.
Dark times are not hopelessly negative but are essential to God’s plan for our lives. What may appear as darkness to us is all part of God’s sovereign and purposeful will. And just as my daughter learned to trust my voice and presence in the dark, we are called to trust in God’s presence and guidance during our dark times.
How can we trust God even in the darkest seasons of work?
When we face challenges such as losing a job, experiencing burnout, feeling unfulfilled, or encountering setbacks on a project, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and lost in the darkness. However, we need to keep working, trusting in the empowerment God has given us for our assignment. The darkness we perceive does not diminish the strength and guidance God provides.
It’s important to recognise that although we may see darkness, God sees light, and our perspectives should align with His. Rather than feeling despair, we should continue working as if everything around us is illuminated, trusting in God’s strength and wisdom. By choosing to walk in the light, acknowledging God’s presence, and maintaining faith, we can navigate through the dark times of our work with confidence.
“I choose to see the light in this season, walking with God holding my hand.”
Acknowledging that we work with God’s light makes the darkness lose its power over us. The next time you feel overwhelmed, call on God in faith, believing that He is with you and walking with you through the challenges.
As we shift our perspective to walk in God’s light, our outlook changes, and we begin to see restoration, clarity, and fulfilment in our work. Let’s trust in God’s light, and may He guide us through every dark season.
