Growing up, whenever my dad would speak with or see our family doctor, he’d address him with the nickname, “Nobody like you!”
He’d say it with so much excitement that one would think it’s a code word for something else. I would always look at my dad with a puzzled look wondering what was so exciting about this “giver of pills and annoying injections”.
But it was simply dad’s way of reminding our doctor that he appreciated his unique approach to work.
There Is Nobody Like You
We’ve all had to imitate several people over the years. Whether it’s in the way they talk, laugh, write, make presentations, dance, work, etc. But eventually, we always find a personal rhythm to it all.
When we yield, our very existence discards what is unnatural to us, adopts what is and tweaks the rest. After all, the thumbprint starts with lines which everyone has. Yours’ just curves different from mine.
The error would be in doing everything possible to be like someone else. You end up adopting their good deeds and flaws.
This is why the work we do affects so many parts of our lives. We spend most of our waking hours working and mingling with other workers, absorbing, discarding and tweaking traits. Days turn into weeks and we develop habits.
You get promoted and 10 years later you realise you’re leading your team just like your first boss whom you disliked.
Becoming like someone else may be unavoidable, but you can never be 100% someone else. Something always makes you different. So, thrive in it.
