“But when you help a needy person, do it in such a way that even your closest friend will not know about it. [4] Then it will be a private matter. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you.” Matthew 6:3-4 GNT
The ability to read the intent behind an action is so powerful that only God has it. Man can try to decode, but we’re never fully correct. And this is why being critical and judging others is a wrong move.
It’s possible to see a video on social media of someone being generous to another in need and feel it was just done for the gram. It’s possible it was. But it’s also possible that putting it online was a medium to gather financial support from others.
When you do good work and bless others through it, you may be tempted to hide because the scripture says, in a hushed tone, “Don’t let anyone know”. But that’s not what it means.
The true meaning is, don’t do it because you want recognition. Do it out of the genuine love you have in your heart.
Being empowered to help others is a channel God uses to replicate His love. He uses you and I to show more people that He genuinely loves us.
That’s what should drive us. Not the recognition, or the rewards we would get in return. Just the genuine love of God in our hearts.
How can we ensure our intent stays pure as we show God’s love to more people through work?
In this digital age where nothing is a secret, the best way to multiply the impact of what you do is by spreading your message online.
There’s a common advice now that says, “Don’t put yourself out there before your time”. But when is your time? Is it when you’re an expert in your field or when you are retired?
I believe it’s not a question of timing (when) but purpose (why). If you’re a newbie passionate about helping others through your craft and decide to go hard online because you want to get better at what you do, then that’s genuine based on human judgement.
If you’re a 20-year veteran in your field who decides to put more work online because others are doing it and you don’t want to feel left out, that’s questionable.
As we acknowledge God in everything we do; before and while we do them, He’ll guide us to know when to start or stop. Sometimes, you may feel a nudging in your heart to wait. And other times, the Holy Spirit will push you to speak up.
Choose to work with Him and He’ll work with you.
“To spread God’s love to others, I will start doing the following…and my reasons for doing them are…”
As you write down the activities you desire to do, also take note of why. This will help guide your intent as you decide what to do or not do.
You may start an activity with good intentions and people can judge you wrongly. But remember that only God sees the heart and He is the rewarder.
