Your work has a place. If you do it in the wrong place, it won’t yield for you.
The farmer has no business in stony places. Only those who need cement go there. The farmer looks for good soil.
If a street hawker selling picture frames goes to a farm to sell, he may not make a profit. He must be at the wayside where people regularly pass through.
In the early days of my business, God told me I was sent to individuals, not corporations. In other words, my business dealings and transactions were to be directly with the founder or CEO, and not through managers or a team, playing intermediary.
I didn’t understand what this meant until I started noticing trends. I realised that small-scale entrepreneurs who had very few team members would completely outsource digital marketing to my firm. The project would start and end with them as my direct reporting line. Then owners of larger companies would come to me for help with personal digital projects that had nothing to do with their multimillion-dollar firms.
I discovered this after making mistakes. There was once a Group CEO who wanted to recreate his digital presence as a John Maxwell Leadership Coach. We created the website, digital strategy and did some social media work.
Then one day towards the end of the year, I was in his office, and he mentioned that one of his companies needed calendars done for the new year. He asked if it was something I could do and as a young man looking to gain experience and save money for my wedding, I obliged. Big mistake! I wasn’t into the printing business, and this would mean reporting to a manager in his firm. I started having a bad feeling at once but went ahead.
I got all the content I needed, outsourced the design to a friend of mine and paid in advance like I always do. After they approved the design and I sent a quotation, I received the shock of my life in an email.
I was told that I would get paid 60 days after completing the project. This was a seven-figure project that I didn’t have the capital for. Even if I sold my father, mother and siblings, I won’t be able to raise the capital.
I sent them an email expressing my displeasure about being informed this late about their company policy. I counted my losses and walked away from the project. But the truth is I was ignorant about how corporations worked and realised I wasn’t built to serve them at the time.
This was just one of several experiences with large companies that showed me I had to realign with where I was positioned for exploits and greatness.
I felt bad because I thought the only way to make a lot of money was to deal with large companies. I would feel sad and depressed comparing myself with my counterparts who managed such projects. But God showed me over the years that individuals can hold and release such amounts, for a fraction of the work.
