It’s very easy to make yourself believe that you can make it on your own, without any help. But that’s the enemy’s tactic to isolate you so that you have limited options. That’s not how God designed it.
At every stage in life, there are levers which create a form of leverage. When we are sensitive enough to spot these levers, or favoured enough to be given a lever, we can use them to get to the next level.
Mephibosheth was given a lever that changed his life. This lever was a two-fold inheritance – name and fortune. He enjoyed the benefits of Proverbs 13:22 and Proverbs 22:1.
Earlier in my career, I was the Head of Strategy and Planning at a Management Consulting firm, and we had the big project of rebranding a multi-million-dollar transport company. But how did we get that contract?
The founder of the company decided to give his sons rights to manage the growth of the firm for the next generation. In other words, he gave them an inheritance. His sons were close friends with my boss because they all went to the same secondary school.
Now many years later, seeing the new responsibility they had, and realising that my boss at the time had the solution they needed, it was easy giving him the work. He had made a good name for himself by being a longstanding friend, and that brought favour his way, and by extension, our way.
The sons did not have to grow a new company from scratch, look for funding or make the mistakes that startups will make. They had the structure, connections, finance and foundation that their father had built.
You may not have an inheritance from your parents, but favour, through the good name of your parents, or your good name, can plug you into the inheritance of another family, just like the story I shared.
This is also a call to action for you and me. As we work, we must understand that inheritance has the power to make the work that our children will do more fruitful. If they must have access to the vast wealth that they never toiled for, then we must create the leverage they need.
