“Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.” Ephesians 5:1 NKJV
Over the years. I developed poor sleeping habits. Because I was addicted to work, I would not take naps mid-day and have work vigils at night, sleeping for barely four hours.
I did this for years before I started to adjust when I got married and recognised my addictions. I didn’t realise what I was doing until I became a dad of two.
My daughter has terrible sleeping habits and, most of the time, has to be forced to sleep. I wondered why she had this trait until I read that children always adopt their parents’ habits, even those that may have been dropped years before birth.
It’s like our habits are ingrained in our DNA and passed down so that our children become improved versions: they automatically adopt our traits and learn new things. It was a scary discovery.
This means one thing: to be an imitator of God, you must be a child of God.
In the dispensation of the law, man strived to imitate God but never succeeded because it needed human effort. Then, the Holy Spirit came and became our DNA so that once we accept Jesus, we can function like God.
How can we imitate how God works?
God was gracious enough to create us in His image so that we could be fruitful, multiply, replenish, subdue, and dominate. With the help of the Holy Spirit, it is now easier to successfully move through this cycle.
Ultimately, God wants us to dominate kingdoms, industries, spheres of influence, and everything He places in our hands. But we often drop off along the way because it’s not a walk in the park.
One method God uses to move us through the cycle is to call us to something greater. He shows us how He wants us to dominate and helps us through it if we allow Him.
This is the time to ask questions like:
- How can I be fruitful with what God has given me?
- How can I multiply what He has given me?
- How can I replenish what God has given me?
- How can I subdue the challenges that arise?
- How can I dominate with what God has given me?
We often like to start with the last question. Instead, start from the first and act on what you put down. It’s the only way to rule over what God has placed in our hands.
“I am a god born of God.”
Do you live life like someone who rules or someone to be ruled over?
Jesus said we are gods, and so we can act like one. With the Holy Spirit in us, we can imitate God so much that people will see Him through us.
