“The Lord our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying: ‘You have dwelt long enough at this mountain.” Deuteronomy 1:6 NKJV
Sometimes it’s difficult to get over past failures. As bright as the future can be, it can also be daunting to move towards it because of all the fear and obstacles that rise along the way. So, the convenient thing that we often do is to stay in the familiar. After all, “the devil you know is better than the one you don’t”…or so we say.
I’ve been able to start new projects, take up responsibilities, fail and succeed because of sheer curiosity. Sometimes I may not know what the future of that activity holds or the possible obstacles that would come up. I simply move and ask myself, “I wonder what would happen if I did this?”
Acting based on just curiosity isn’t the ultimate because in many cases, you must plan and assess where you’re going and if you want to go there. But it’s a viable antidote to stagnancy.
As a young person with limited responsibilities, curiosity is easy. As you move to more difficult stages in life that require you to make careful decisions because of the impact they could have, your level of curiosity can begin to diminish. These days, I find myself dwelling on the same mountain for extended periods just like the Israelites. Occasionally I realize this and remind myself to stay curious.
Curiosity helps release the right emotions that make you eager and excited about a new opportunity. It’s the foundation for innovation and action. Without it, we will not enjoy the inventions that have made life easy for us today.
The next time you find yourself going around the same mountain multiple times; just being busy without doing the real work that keeps tugging at your heart, know that it’s time to get curious about what life would be like if you only took the next step.
