Why do you do what you do?
I’ve had the privilege of speaking at seminars and mentoring students at different times and for most people, they never really have the right answer to this question until we drill down several levels deep.
For many, the obvious generic answer is “to put food on the table” or “to serve God” and that’s understandable, given the circumstances and responsibilities. But when we go deeper you’ll often see underlying quests to boost self confidence, prove our worth, get back at our friends, not end up like someone close, call someone’s bluff, achieve what our parents couldn’t, be recognised for something good, cover up a past hurt, show compassion, win souls, etc.
The reason why this is so important is because your motive influences your passion, methods, values, speed, dependence on God and more. I can say it determines how you see life and the type of success you’ll attain. Someone with a negative motive won’t pursue success the same way someone with a positive motive will, even if they’re running the same business with the same amount of capital and in the same environment.
In closed sessions I like to ask people to tell a story of their experiences that led up to that answer. It’s vulnerable but revelatory. Plus it helps in crafting their authentic message.
Do you want to try a simple exercise? With respect to your work, answer the question above and for every answer you give, ask “why?” Do this 6 to 10 times. Let’s see what you come up with…#winks.
