“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” 1 John 4:7 NIV
Why are we always reminded to love one another? I can see three reasons:
- Love is not in our nature.
- Some people are just too hard to love.
- We don’t know what love is.
These reasons become insignificant once we allow the Holy Spirit to train us on how to love.
But it’s not easy because we’ll have to be broken first. To be broken is to be separated from whatever messed up ideologies we had about how others should be treated. When we’re broken, our scars become visible.
There was a time I clearly said, “I don’t know how to love people”. I said that because I had a worldview that expected people to be perfect, so it was difficult to love imperfection.
Do I still know how to love people? No, but I can never make that statement again because now I know I’m learning. I’m imperfect and a work in progress.
Every time I do something to or for someone else, I check in with my conscience to discern its heaviness. This tells me if what I did was wrong and the next right step to take.
We learn to love every day. Be conscious about this, and you’ll get all the guidance you need.
How can you show love to someone who wants to sabotage your work?
I have a client whose business faced attacks from former employees and competitors. They’d take her clients, tarnish her brand, and eventually reduce her revenue.
She’s in her 50s and has learned to not take matters into her own hands. Instead, she studies what they’re doing and creates systems to avoid it in the future. And she’d say something like, “They know something I don’t know, and it’s helping them win. I wish them well.”
She’s been through tough seasons but always comes out victorious.
One thing I like about having a relationship with God is I can report people to Him. Then I let Him, as my daddy, take care of them. He always deals with people through the lens of love. So, I’ve shown love to them by allowing God to show love to them in His way. Win-Win.
“To be more conscious about how I show love to others, I must start doing these things…”
You can’t fake love, otherwise, you’ll do it in the flesh. I tried it and it didn’t work. God had to show me my imperfections before my lens changed.
Search the scriptures to see how Christ showed love to others. And use your shortcomings to recognize how others need love too.
