“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is passing. But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.” Proverbs 31:30–31 NKJV
I’m a very reserved person, not one to boast about myself. These verses served as a call to action. It made me realise that when we fear the Lord, He can position us to be praised by others, not out of pride but because of how we reflect God’s glory in everything we do. So, not promoting myself is a disservice.
As Christians, God has empowered each of us to do specific work. Our works should be visible to others, especially in places where they matter. The city gate is where important transactions happen. It’s not just about showcasing our work but also ensuring that it reaches the right audience—those willing and able to appreciate and support it.
However, perception makes many of us hesitate to put our work out there. We question if people will appreciate it or if we need help finding time for self-promotion. It’s important to push past these barriers if we desire the blessings we’ve been praying for.
How can the work we do attract the results and the influence that we want?
To make our works worthy of praise, we need to focus on several key aspects:
- The quality of our work matters. Just like the woman in Proverbs 31 was praised for her generosity, prudence, and industriousness, quality should shine through what we produce. Exceptional work attracts praise. If we lack confidence in the quality we create, we’ll hesitate to promote it.
- Being bold is crucial. We must be willing to talk about our work, breaking through any obstacles holding us back. Additionally, understanding that not everyone is for us is essential. Our work isn’t for everyone. There will be people who won’t resonate with it, and that’s okay. We need to focus on our specific target audience—those whom God has sent us to.
- Packaging is also important, but not the ultimate factor. We must aim for both inner and outer excellence. When we revere God, we are compelled to create in exceptional ways, mirroring His excellence.
Putting our work out there should be intentional. It’s not about reaching a perfect state from the start but about having the right intent—a willingness to learn and grow. We must focus on our target audience, be bold in self-promotion, deliver exceptional quality, and ensure our outward appearance reflects the work’s true essence.
“I do, and put out good work.”
If you’ve been hesitant to showcase your work, ask yourself why. Are you too concerned about people’s opinions? Do you need more certainty about the quality you bring? I also need to address these barriers.
Remember, God has already empowered you for the work you do. Telling others how God has enabled us and the results we produce brings glory back to Him and draws others closer because of His work in our lives.
