I’m not a fan of book-reading challenges where you are given a medal for reading 100 books in one year. I mostly read non-fiction, and I almost always have a highlighter or pen and journal in hand when reading. I do this to take down notes.
For me, speed reading in the name of meeting up with a timeline and missing all the key points is self-deception. Aside from this, in what other ways do we deceive ourselves?
- When we read but don’t apply the Word to our mission. Anytime I study the word, I mostly spot work-related lessons in it. I have a friend who sees nothing but negotiation lessons. What do you see when you study?
- When we don’t dwell on what we read. Life is busy, and it gets difficult to set time aside to meditate. This is one trick the devil has successfully implemented to stop us. But if we can have one day to just meditate, it will do us a lot of good.
- When we choose to stay unteachable. For many, reading the bible is religion. “Let’s just read it,” they’ll say. But when you read and are corrected by the Holy Spirit, that’s a good sign.

How can being a doer help us become exceptional at work?
I believe that the way you do one thing is the way you do many things. If you have the discipline needed to study the Word of God, pull out key points and intentionally change your lifestyle based on what you learn, you’ll be surprised at how that discipline and intentionality spill into your work.
People will wonder why you are so detailed and thorough. They won’t understand that you build character daily in the secret place.

Now that you are a doer, it is time to be even more intentional about what you will do. Write this down in your journal or to-do list and get started. For me, that one action is ensuring this newsletter is scheduled to reach you. It’s not an easy feat…lol!
