“They should always be available to solve the people’s common disputes, but have them bring the major cases to you. Let the leaders decide the smaller matters themselves. They will help you carry the load, making the task easier for you.” Exodus 18:22 NLT
God has set a framework for leadership that creation must follow to thrive. From setting certain lights to rule day and night, respectively, to giving man authority to dominate, He figured it all out.
Replicating God’s process requires His wisdom. We often try to fix things ourselves but cannot do so because of our frame of reference.
I used to find delegation extremely difficult until God sat me down in January 2022. I received wisdom I never had before, which made my later leadership experiences quite different. While I still have much to learn, I’m not where I used to be.
Moses needed this same wisdom, and Jethro, standing here as counsellor (what the Holy Spirit is to us), gives him that wisdom. With God’s wisdom, you can lead anyone, anywhere.
How can we share the workload through delegation?
Several books have covered this subject, but it’s fascinating that the scripture has the blueprint. Here are some delegation lessons to learn:
- Transfer decision-making power. Sometimes, we are tempted to have a monopoly over every decision because we want to know everything going on.
As my coach says, sometimes it’s better to look away and let others handle it. When we trust those we put in positions to make decisions, we need only be concerned with core issues. - Desire to share the load. In the bid to show we’re effective, inexperience causes us to shoulder more than we ought to. We do the same thing when trying to meet set expectations.
Sharing the load increases the quality of life and ensures everyone on the team knows the expectations and invested efforts.
“I trust those I lead.”
Do you currently take up every responsibility yourself? How well do you work with others?
Going it alone boils down to a lack of trust in those who collaborate with you. When you understand that God’s spirit can inspire anyone to do excellent work, you’ll be more willing to give people opportunities to be filled. We are all a work in progress.
