“I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13 NLT
We trust God and not man because God never fails us. But sometimes, we must trust ourselves too when we need something done.
There are consequences of trust, which in God’s case, includes you and I being filled with joy and peace. But trusting in man has varying consequences.
Sometimes it’s good. Sometimes you wish you didn’t bother. But my question is, “When people decide to trust you, what do they get in return?”
As ambassadors of the kingdom of God, when people decide to trust us, two things must happen:
- We commit that trust to God because we are human and can disappoint
- We work with the Holy Spirit to work out positive results for that trust they placed in us
When you lead people, whether small or large, you have a burden of trust to carry. Commit it to the burden bearer and He’ll help you do things right.
How can we feel confident enough to fulfil our promises to others when they trust us?
For years, I disliked leadership positions because I didn’t want to be responsible for large numbers of people. As the first-born son, I had enough responsibility already.
I felt it was by my power that I could lead people. Unknown to me, God was willing to help me lead, and it wasn’t until much later that I realized this.
The latter part of the anchor scripture shows that when we choose to trust in God, we receive something else in return – confident hope.
Hope is dependent on what we can see. When you stand in front of people and tell them that they can count on you, it’s possible to still shiver on the inside. But confident hope helps you stand strong because you have the backing of the Holy Spirit.
I call this “leading from the spirit”, and not from the flesh. The flesh will fail you because it has a flawed interpretation of what good and evil mean. You can be manipulated into doing evil and yet feel you have a right to do it.
But the Spirit knows the absolute truth and guides us into all truth so that we act the way God desires. Let Him take the wheel.
