In 2014, I worked for a man. Let’s call him “The Boss”. Out of 12 months, he only paid for 9.
And no salary was paid in full. I wasn’t stupid, I was just learning on the job because it was different. August 2015, I turned in my resignation the second time (he rejected the first one in February) and automatically had a bad vibe about employment.
For two years after that, The Boss kept calling me, requesting that I come back to the biz and this time, not even as an employee. I turned the offer down.
After a while, I decided to give The Boss a chance. So I did something small for him on a project in 2017 (this year).
Guess what? The Boss did not pay as at when due. And when he asked me why I cancelled our scheduled meeting even though payment was delayed, I said, “Trust is not developed by magic”.
If you’re a leader, don’t be like The Boss because this time around, it’ll take you serious work to redeem yourself and earn the trust of whoever you work with, especially if you’re working with people who are good at their craft.
You’ll have to be consistent for a long time before you can make any mistakes. That to me is worse than ensuring you make a good first impression.
Trust is not negotiated. It is earned. If I have learned anything from this, it is how not to be a leader.
And if you work for someone, be intentional about your life. People have made you believe that there will always be scarcity. So they cage your psychology and make you believe that without them, you’re nothing.
Proverbs 22:29 is simple. Recognition follows diligence, regardless of who you work with, where you work, or what you do. You’ll have yourself to blame if you lack diligence.
Be intentional about everything, including the work you do and the people you work with. A building is not constructed by chance.
