“Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.” Matthew 6:34 MSG
With deliverables, targets, and a pile of tasks on your hands, it can be quite challenging to be present in each moment. Sometimes, you just want it all to pass so you can get through tomorrow.
I often struggle with anxiety and sometimes, negative self-talk when I have a project at hand or a pending deliverable that I really don’t want to do. I’m usually either overthinking the outcome, or a voice tells me it won’t work out as planned.
What do you think eventually happens? Some tiny details get missed so that those negative emotions get validated with actual manifestations.
But I’m starting to learn that I cannot be in control of every situation because I can’t see tomorrow. One reason the focus scripture says we should just focus on now is that God knows our limitations. When we try to do what only God can do, which is worry about tomorrow, we get frustrated. But living each moment is an ability He has given us.
How exactly can we live each moment?
One way is to regulate what is happening now. That can mean listening to edifying songs so the voices in our heads get replaced.
You can also ensure that whatever work you do gives you a sense of fulfilment. Doing work you have no business doing can cause you to continuously hope for a future without it, making you detest every present moment.
The final one is to trust that God knows what He is doing. This is hard and takes all the discipline we can muster, but it works. Knowing you have backing can make you move confidently through your day.
You can know the events of tomorrow as you plan but focus on today’s goals. Worrying about tomorrow leads to overwhelm and mental paralysis. Let’s not have any of that.
Today’s Task: What is God doing right now in your life? Write this down in your favourite journal.
Answer This…
“Living purposefully at this stage of my life means that…”
Answering this will help you know how to make each day worth living. And even if you’re not there now, knowing what it is will create a homing signal in the future for your present.
