One of the best ways to discover more about yourself and your capabilities is to serve others. Not service as a leader, but as a follower, submitting to someone higher than you. This can be in ministry or professionally.
I discovered my gifts and fine-tuned my skills by serving in the church. From my days on campus, I was sold out, ensuring I was available for any assignment that came my way.
Serving in Church has always been my way of showing God gratitude for all He has blessed me with. And God has never failed to add more to me.
There are many books and videos on leadership, with several punchlines on why you must be a leader and not a follower. I’ve led people from my days in primary school. I have always been a candidate for leadership positions. But in that mix, I have followed.
With this mindset, God has given me access to opportunities through my leaders in ways I could never have orchestrated. I come to memory when something good comes their way.
Through following others in church and the marketplace, my earning power has increased. I have walked into spaces and had lunch with people I only saw on TV, and my worldview has changed.
With all these experiences and insights acquired through serving others as a follower, I have utilised them in spaces where I lead. It allows me to add more value and speak with wisdom.
Never underestimate the power of followership. And never get tired of following others. There’s always new wisdom to acquire and new value to give. Even if you are in a leadership position now across all areas of your life, there’s always someone to follow whose direct impact on your life can’t be quantified.
I pray you find that person and receive wisdom on navigating that relationship.
