“We are not people who turn back and are lost…” Hebrews 10:39 GNT
Sometimes when things happen, you want to remove your godly hat and show the other person who is boss. It’s like we’re saying this Christian tag I wear is only temporary. I can become someone else as the need arises. It may sound funny, but we unconsciously do this.
There are times I’ll hear a voice telling me to avoid giving a response, but because I feel I’m being taken advantage of, I respond anyway. Turning the other cheek can be difficult, especially when we feel our sense of self-worth is at stake.
I once had an experience where I wept after acting against a team member. All I could say in between the tears was, “I’ve lost myself”. This is what happens when we act in ways Christ will not approve.
Does this mean the ego is bad? This depends on perspective and how we choose to interpret the matter at hand. It can be either beneficial or detrimental, depending on how it is expressed.
For example, current studies in neuroscience show that the ego is involved in self-awareness and self-control. It’s what helps us pursue goals, set personal boundaries, and make decisions.
However an inflated and unhealthy ego leads to selfishness, feelings of insecurity, lack of empathy for others and arrogance. This affects the relationships we have.
So, what’s the way forward? First, understand who you are not, which is a part-time Christian. There’s no tag to remove at will, otherwise, you’ll lose your identity, just as Apostle Paul advised in the focus scripture.
It’s not an easy task, but I believe that with practice, we’ll be able to avoid getting involved in the drama created by other people and be the bigger person in every situation.
Today’s Task: No matter what happens today, be the bigger person.
Have you acted in ways that you wish you could correct if only time can be reversed? Please share.
