It’s fascinating how we all see the world differently. With billions of humans on this planet, we have over a billion different world views. I say this because I’ve been in spaces where this subject is argued.
Some say ministry work is from the Lord, while your profession is just secular work for yourself. Others say secular work is more important because that’s what puts food on the table, so ministry work should take the back bench.
I disagree with both views. Firstly, you work hard at what you value. If something isn’t important to you, you will not be motivated to put in the work.
Secondly, all blessings come from God. And He has also promised in His Word to bless all the works of your hand, whether it’s secular or ministry, so why the dividing line? I particularly have a problem with the word “secular” because there’s now a merger between your religious beliefs and where you work. But for lack of a better word, I’ll use it in this post.
For many years, serving in Church was my learning platform for my profession. For example, I once received a responsibility to anchor certain programs in the church, interviewing guest ministers and professionals on certain subjects. In a matter of months, I got a job interviewing business leaders for a monthly magazine publication.
If you have a call to occupy a certain ministerial office alongside your profession, both work environments require your 100% if you’ve committed to it. If you don’t have such a call, then don’t despise those who do.
Life is in phases; today you may be led to function in both environments and in a few years, God can take you out of one, so you focus on the other. Likewise, you may only have a responsibility in secular environments and tomorrow, you grow a burden for ministry.
The important thing to note is God can use one side to influence the other. The meeting point for Paul and Acquila was their profession. From there, ministry assignments began.
The main goal is to always be at the centre of God’s will. Both environments are important and if you rightly stand for Christ in your current work environment(s), you can be blessed through any channel.
