Power Up Your SPIRIT
“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”
Hebrews 12:11 NIV
Remember how you disliked specific meals in your early years because of how they tasted? Then, with more knowledge and growth, you realised that those meals you didn’t want to eat would help you grow big and strong. That’s just what we’re being taught here.
Discipline is hard, and sometimes, we run from it. I know how many habits I quit because I couldn’t sustain the discipline required.
But the author says it’s all part of our growth process. Saying we want to be like Christ, do exploits and become what God wants us to be will require a lot from us.
And I wish I could tell you that we’ll succeed and be disciplined with all our endeavours, but that’s an individual choice.
Sometimes, we’ll choose one form of discipline over another due to the season of life we’re in. It just won’t make sense to have some experiences.
Other times, we’ll have the guts to go through it all, enduring and adapting as we move along.
But understand one thing: God is always willing to work through us to do what He knows is best for us. That could mean eating that irritating bowl of veggies now, or going through a healing process so you don’t have to face toxic relationships anymore.
It’s your call.

How can we ensure we reap the benefits of discipline at work?
I believe we must first answer three questions:
- What is my goal here?
- What do I need to be disciplined in to hit my goal?
- Is it worth it?
That third question is so important because it can make or break your answers to the first two questions.
If you feel it’s not worth it, but you still go ahead because you’re trying to please someone else, things may not work out well.
If you feel it’s worth it, you’ll surmount new challenges that you didn’t foresee.
You must choose what’s worth it and what isn’t. Vet the price and the sacrifices you need to make for that goal that requires discipline. Then answer question 3.

“If I were going to become even more proud of who I am, and I were going to live more congruently with that vision of myself, I would have to start…”
(source: GrowthDay)
When you make the sacrifices you know are worth it, you’ll be proud of who you become. When you are disciplined in something that gives you fulfilment, you enjoy the benefits from day one.
So, who do you want to be and what do you need to start to become that person?
