“…and I was afraid and went and hid your talents in the ground. Look. There you have what is yours. But his Lord answered and said to him, you wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed. So, you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming, I would have received back my own with interest.” Matthew 25:25–27 NKJV
We all have a natural inclination to seek safety and comfort. However, staying in our safe zones can limit our capacity for growth and expression. When we have a risk appetite of zero, we subconsciously repel new things from coming our way.
We become unable to create and express our true potential. God has given us the capacity to create, and with that comes the mandate to try new things and bring into existence that which has not existed in the physical before.
Embracing risk does not mean we take senseless, reckless actions. Rather, it involves stepping out of our comfort zones when necessary, taking calculated leaps, and being open to exploring new opportunities. It requires us to recognise that staying in a place of safety and comfort can also be a risk. God did not design us to stay stagnant but to continuously evolve and grow.
We all have different levels of risk tolerance. What may feel like a daunting risk to one person may be a comfortable step for another. It’s crucial to understand that the risk we need to embrace is personalised to our own journey and next level.
Embracing risk is not about comparing ourselves to others or mimicking their actions. It’s about identifying the specific risks required for our individual growth and boldly taking those steps forward.
How can we embrace risk in multiplying the resources we have received through work?
Fear often masquerades as a barrier to taking risks. Just as the servant in the story was afraid, we too can be held back by the fear of the unknown. However, we must recognise that fear is an internal factor.
Philippians 4:8 urges us to meditate on things that are true, noble, just, pure, and lovely. It highlights the importance of renewing our minds daily with the Word of God so that we interpret things differently. When we allow our minds to be filled with God’s truth, we are better equipped to overcome fear and embrace the risks that lead to our growth and fulfilment.
Embracing risk is a recognition that to grow and evolve into what we are destined to be, we are willing to step out of our safe zones when the call arises.

This isn’t about imitating someone else’s risk, but about identifying the risks required for our own growth and purpose. We should seek God’s guidance and the mental strength to take that leap into the next level of our calling.
The desire for safety and comfort is legitimate, but may we also be courageous and purposeful in taking the necessary risks to unlock our divine potential.
