How Does God Want You To Lead?

“And you shall teach them the statutes and the laws and show them the way in which they must walk and the work they must do.” Exodus 18:20 NKJV

God recognises leadership (Hebrew 13:17) and expects more from leaders. Using the shepherd’s example, he’ll choose someone who loves his sheep, just like David.

If you’re a leader in an organisation, your role doesn’t just end in assigning responsibilities and making everyone do your bidding. You are almost like a Pastor with a congregation.

Because every leader will account for the souls they lead, doing the barest minimum is not acceptable. This doesn’t mean you should strive to be a better leader by following rules. This is an Old Testament tradition.

Leadership is genuinely done out of love for the people we lead. Because love grows in our hearts, we take more interest in them, interceding for and equipping them so they can be better.

How does God want us to lead at work?

As Christian leaders, we are guided by God’s word, which is our compass in daily decision-making. As ambassadors, we think, act, and speak according to God’s word.

When Jethro gave Moses wise counsel, he shared two roles he must play as a leader. These roles apply even in corporate organisations.

1. Teach God’s statutes and laws. This doesn’t mean holding Bible study classes at work. It means guiding employees in the right direction and giving them advice from God’s word.

For example, if some team members have difficulty setting priorities, we show them how we do it and reveal where we got our strategy from—the Bible.

This means that we are responsible for applying God’s word in our lives to teach it to others.

2. Show them how to conduct their lives. This is about character formation and taking the right actions.

The only way to do this is to walk the talk. We can’t tell those we lead to be kind, yet we are unkind. We’ll contradict God’s word.

Every leader is flawed, and sometimes we fall short of what we teach. But the goal must always be to plant God’s word in our hearts, practice it, and then show others how we do it. We can only show with practice.
