“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
Recently, we started teaching our three-year-old daughter to memorise scripture. This is because we understand that in time of need, it is the Word of God you have in your heart that the Holy Spirit brings to your remembrance.
She may still need to understand salvation or be ready for it, but no training goes to waste. This anchor scripture happened to be the first verse of the Bible that she memorised.
When it eventually stuck to her memory after two weeks of repetition, I realised how privileged she was. In my life, I have gone through circumstances that this verse could have averted if I had it in my heart.
The power of fear has crippled me to the point of inaction and self-pity, thus making me sabotage my success. And this fear grows into trauma with each negative experience.
How can we overcome fear and move forward with action?
I believe it is possible to go through a negative experience and not come out of it fearful about the next.
In Daniel 3, being thrown into a burning furnace is a negative experience many won’t live to tell. But not for the Hebrew brothers. It became an experience that didn’t stop them from doing what was right.
Why? They involved God through it all. The moment adversity struck, they didn’t wait until they stood near the fire before declaring their confidence in God. They did it from the beginning.
When we involve God from the beginning, He comes with a combo package that holds power, love, and self-discipline. Unwrapping this package helps us become who He wants us to be, despite the negative experience.
We receive the power to fight adverse forces, love to maintain a godly disposition towards others, and a sound mind (self-discipline) to stay through the process.
“I go through life without fear.”
How has fear crippled you in the past? What will you do differently now that you can access God’s combo package?
Fire doesn’t have to burn us. Rivers don’t have to drown us. With God, we can come out of any experience unburnt and unshaken.
