“But one thing I do…reaching forward to those things which are ahead.” Philippians 3:13 NKJV
Success hits differently when you can recognise the transformation you have experienced. Yes, the applause and awards will be there, but the real question is, can you find and appreciate how those achievements have made you a better person?
In the bid to “make it in life”, we sometimes get paralysed by the multiple areas that we need to get better at. When we eventually get started with one, inconsistency sets in, and we stop. The problem isn’t that we’re bad or lazy. We’re just overwhelmed with our KPIs for success.
I didn’t create the concept of getting 1% better, but it sounded like a foolproof plan when I heard and understood it. It’s simple: Pick one small aspect you want to get better at and only focus on just that aspect daily for a predetermined period. I know there are several aspects you wish to develop but forget them and pick one.
Yes, it looks like little progress, which is why it’s scored at 1%, but it adds up over time. Imagine you pick one habit every month for twelve months. By the end of the year, you would have gained mastery over twelve habits. This is a better strategy than starting the first month with twelve habits you wrote in your journal, only to max out by the second month.
In most new year’s resolutions I’ve written, I realised that only a few items got done while some were not even attempted. Focusing on just 1% daily frees you of guilt, helps you feel like you’re making progress and gives your brain one thing to focus all efforts on at a time. Genius!
If you’ve tried this out before, let me know how it worked for you. But the rest of us at the back of the class who are yet to try it will get started today :). Are you with me?
