“Teach me to do Your will [so that I may please You], For You are my God; Let Your good Spirit lead me on level ground.” Psalms 143:10 AMP
When we set goals, it’s very tempting to stick to what we want to achieve. After all, that’s what we were taught all our lives. If the goals aren’t aligned with what I want, then why set them in the first place?
But there’s a bigger picture. Have you tried setting goals based on what God wants for you?
Yes, it’s a different approach, because you first have to know what God wants, before you can set goals for them.
So, as we set our goals, let’s also ask God to reveal His will for the year and teach us how to do that will. This way, we easily access what Grace has already provided for us this year.
How can we set our work and life goals according to God’s will?
Through relationship.
It’s not the easiest of paths, but it’s the only path that comes with rest. When God reveals to us what He wants us to do, and we make His will our goal, we’re sure that He’ll back up every action we take.
If Peter had known that Jesus would be around in the morning to show them the side of the boat that had fish, perhaps he would not have wasted time toiling all night, catching nothing.
But this is what happens to us. We toil so much at work, striving to attain something we have not yet received.
What if we saved ourselves from that stress by going to God first to find out what Grace has provided, and then by faith, put in the work to access that provision? We’ll be more at rest because we know what to do to achieve the goal.
“This year, I choose to work from a place of rest. I will discover God’s will for my work by doing the following…”
It’s never too late to find what God has in mind. Even if you’ve set your goals, you can always refine them.
You may not have the luxury of taking a week off just to pray and seek God’s face (especially if you’ve been unable to do that). But perhaps you can devote some time each day to that. Find what works, integrate your devotion into your workday, and align your will with God’s will so that you have the best year yet.
