“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘…I will arise and go to my father…” Luke 15:17-18 NKJV
While it’s important to never lose your core identity as you grow through life, it’s equally important to rid yourself of limiting beliefs that will hold you back.
Some beliefs I had as an undergraduate over a decade ago have now become alien to me almost a decade later. And for the next level of my growth, I also have to assess what I believe to be true and create new ones.
Beliefs are strong pathways in our brains that determine the lens through which we see life. If you believe having a car is bad, you’ll always see reasons to not have one. If you believe that relationships will always end in betrayal, you’ll most likely sabotage your next one.
You currently have beliefs that sustain you at your current level. You also have beliefs that can take you to the next level and those that will stop you from moving forward.
This is why self-examination is always so important. There are times I would notice stunted growth and I start to assess what could be wrong. For a long time, I thought getting new skills could solve almost anything. It took me a while to realise that sometimes, paying for a new course, or creating a new project isn’t what’s needed. I just need to get rid of some limiting beliefs holding me back.
To restore your identity just like the prodigal son, you need to come to yourself and realise those beliefs that have crept into your mind after certain experiences. Sometimes all it takes is to create a new experience to overwrite what’s currently dominant in your life. Alternatively, you’ll need to repeat affirmations and intentionally create new beliefs over some time.
Only Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. You’re limited by space and time This is why we need to know what He believes because those beliefs are eternally relevant and potent.
As you grow, never forget to pause and reflect. Don’t settle for pig food when you can be seated at the high table.
