Talk may be cheap, but it can also be expensive when you don’t weigh the impact of your words. When you say something without the intent of fulfilling it, it’s going to be quite expensive to earn back the trust of people.
God had to prove the integrity of His words by fulfilling this focus scripture. If He didn’t, I won’t even be writing this article today.
Integrity is important, and I am very intentional about it. Here’s what I mean:
I am careful about the promises I make.
During the crypto boom a few years back, I joined a network marketing program. With digital skills, I built a vast network of downlines fast, and automatically, major decisions rested on my shoulders.
We ran into a roadblock with activating accounts of downlines, and I had to assure everyone in my team that we would get it fixed. I didn’t know how. I had multiple sleepless nights afterwards and prayed until I got what I needed to solve the issue. The last thing I wanted was to give a false promise just two months into the program.
We may fall short sometimes, but breaking promises should not become a habit.
I observe the integrity of my friends
I do this, not because I perceive myself to have full integrity but because I don’t want the integrity I have to be taken away from me by the wrong association.
When I meet people who make it a habit of saying things that they don’t eventually do, I keep such people at arm’s length because I don’t want my own shortcomings to get worse.
Taking a ton of work on your shoulders and making promises you can’t keep will question your integrity. This is why many of us overwork – we try to keep up with all the promises we have made to our boss, co-workers or friends who need something from us.
Eventually, it’s either we burnout after meeting all the demands, or we start apologising because we were unable to meet the multiple deadlines. This wasn’t the case for Christ.
Christ was intentional about what He did. And whenever He realised that meeting the demands of a certain group of people didn’t align with his goals, he took off and avoided the extra responsibility.
