“…I feel completely secure, because you protect me from the power of death…” Psalm 16:9-10 GNT
One of the benefits of a 9 to 5 job at an organisation with a good culture is the sense of job security that you feel. It’s the reason why those who choose to venture out as entrepreneurs will always question their sense of security. But once they have predictable and consistent revenue, security sets in.
When that job is lost, or a bad decision causes that business to nosedive, where does all that security go? Suddenly you feel out in the wild with no protection.
I have experienced different sides of job security. I’ve felt secure at a job because of predictable income and I have felt left in the cold when my salary gets consistently delayed. I have felt secure in business because of consistent revenue and I’ve felt out in the wild when clients pause their contracts.
This has made me understand that what we define as security is flawed. The foundation of our sense of job security is like the wind that can be blown away.
Death simply means loss, for something to diminish, depreciate, lose value, or lose life. It’s not until we physically die that we experience death. While we do not pray for the things we care about to experience death, sometimes it comes. Where then is our security?
I have learnt to always remind myself that just because I’m at a job or love the business I run doesn’t mean I am secure. Instead, I’m secure because it is God that preserves me and provides for my needs through that job or business. So even when a form of death occurs, He can switch channels so that I never lack. Many times I forget this and let anxiety rule my mind, but it’s the truth.
We are secure, not because of the systems of men, but because He is present and always has our best interests at heart. Security doesn’t come from passion or profit because they can pass away. It should come from a foundation that can never be moved.
So as you work today, make a switch and focus on the real source of security and treat everything you do as simply a channel that God uses to keep you secure.
