“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” Psalm 23:6 KJV
“I am not good enough” was a confession I said to myself many times right up to my teenage years. Somehow, it looked like I fell short of what was expected of me. But that was a lie.
This lie that I had come to believe became the source of trauma that I expressed for the next decade. The irony was I strived to become so good enough to others that I became overworked.
We believe God for one thing but use our words to declare the opposite. This isn’t intentional most times, but our subconscious programming kicks in to fulfil the very thing we don’t want to be.
Imagine praying to God to be successful, yet every time you make a mistake, you tell yourself you can’t do anything right. That’s you using your words as a hook to pull your prayers down.
In the anchor scripture, the author was sure that goodness and mercy would be his daily companions, and he declared it.
What confession are you so sure about today? Your words can empower and disempower you. Pick a side.
How can I use my words to empower my work activities each day?
One recent practice for me is daily confessions. I say “recent” because I was never consistent with it before. Now, I have a system that ensures I do it daily.
I researched the bible and pulled out verses that addressed specific parts of life that I cared about the most. Then I personalized the verses.
Over time, I’ve realized that whenever I am about to do something contrary to a statement in my confession, I pause and rethink.
Affirming a fact with your words doesn’t mean those confessions won’t get challenged. But ensuring they’re top of mind and going through your day with intention can make a difference.
“My confession for today is…”
If you don’t have a daily confession, I encourage you to create one. It may look daunting, but an effortless way is to pick something for each day. Eventually, you can stack everything up into one consistent confession over your life.
Try this: Proclaim over yourself that “today, goodness and mercy will follow me all through the day”.
