“Run, then, in such a way as to win the prize.” 1 Corinthians 9:24 GNT
Work and life are integrated, so one affects the other. It’s the same way training for a race and the race are integrated.
- If your legs must move fast, then strengthen your muscles and get flexible before the race.
- If you don’t want a heart attack during the race, do cardio exercises.
- If you don’t want to carry too much weight while running, watch your diet.
- If you want to stay alert throughout the race, then work on your mind.
- If you want to run freely without any hindrance, choose the right outfit.
- If you want to participate in the race at all, be part of a team.
Running a race to win goes beyond how you run during the race. The training and preparation before the race help you run to win. You can’t do one and leave out the other.
This is the same thing with work. We think we’re performing optimally at work because we get results. But what if you could get even more results if only you allowed your brain to rest a little more?
- What if having a happy family helps us have more empathy at work?
- What if doing the chores at home helps us stay humble when we run into the Janitor in the elevator?
- What if having time to attend events helps us relate better with colleagues at work?
- What if sleeping adequately (not excessively) will increase our performance by 200% at work?
- What if eating at the right time gives us more energy to overdeliver?
- What if meditating on the word of God first thing in the morning boosts our passion for the work tasks ahead?
- What if taking an active role in the church helps us financially support the volunteers we encounter at work?
Quality performance at work is not 100% dependent on the work environment in isolation from everything else. If the rest of your life isn’t okay, it’s only a matter of time before your work joins the train. Even if work is going smooth and giving you everything you want right now, what if it could be better?
I have terrible eating and sleeping habits, with weaknesses I know need to be worked on. So this post is also a note to self as it is a piece of advice to you too.
If something isn’t right at work, let’s check other aspects of our lives so that we all can run to win.
