Some believe that spiritual gifts are for ministry work alone and talents are for the marketplace. I’ve never agreed with this school of thought.
When you become filled with the Holy Spirit, you receive one or more spiritual gifts to help you function as a member of the body of Christ.
Our way of life as Christians preaches the gospel beyond the four walls of the church. The gifts we have are not only activated when we gather for fellowship but they always reside in us.
This means that at any time, in any location, we can be prompted to use our gift to show God’s power at work in us.
Imagine a Doctor with the gift of healing. He has skills gotten through medical training but becomes a channel of hope for patients willing and able to exercise their faith. When prompted, he can join his faith with someone who is sick. It is not part of his job description, nor does he have to do it every time. But when moved, he can and obedience will put the power of God at work, causing manifestations.
You may have believed the lie that spiritual gifts are only for church service and decided to build a career that’s not aligned with your gifts or talents. That can be fixed, no matter the number of years you’ve done this.
You can ask yourself the following questions, as outlined on Medishare to start you on the right path.
1. What are my spiritual gifts?
To know this, you can ask yourself, ask your friend, ask God through prayer and His word (see Romans 12:6-8), or take online assessment tests like churchgrowth.org
2. What natural talents and skills do I have?
Find what comes easy to you and what you enjoy doing. You can also ask the same parties as outlined above.
3. What is your current career path, and why did you choose it?
Understanding why will help you decipher whether a change is what you need.
4. What are your hopes and dreams for the future?
What goals do you have? Create an ideal future that you want to exist in.
This isn’t just for newbies but even for the career veteran who still questions his gifts.
I run a service business for a reason, and that’s because of the spiritual gift of helps. I’ve been the Mr Fix-it, Jack of all trades who is usually available to help in areas where my skills are best suited.
My spiritual gift has also helped me function as a COO, helping a CEO drive his vision. Depending on your skills and experiences, you can build a business, help someone else build theirs, or do both. It is up to you. But to ensure you’re working hard at the right things, work from a foundation of victory, where your gifts and talents give you an edge in the marketplace.
