“If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small.” Proverbs 24:10 NKJV
Adversity occurs when you become a victim of bad luck or misfortune. This can be anything, from having your work presentation flushed down the toilet to losing a loved one. We experience adversity at different times and when it occurs, how we respond becomes a true test of who we are and what we are made up of.
We all need special situations that stretch us beyond what we believe is our capacity. Sometimes these situations can be good challenges because there are benefits attached to the result. Other times, they are negative challenges that make every cell in our brains work overtime while we battle with a waterfall of negative emotions.
When we eventually emerge victorious after such adversity, it’s a sign that we have been feeding ourselves correctly in preparation for that tragedy, without realising it. Food is what gives strength. So, when you’re weak, the question should be, “What have I been feeding myself with?”
We feed our mind, body, and soul daily. Each part requires a different type of food. Unfortunately, we don’t give much attention to the mind and soul and focus on the cravings of the body. Even at that, most of it is unhealthy food.
To build strength in adversity is to be intentional about what we feed ourselves even before adversity strikes. For example, if you already know the importance of having backups, you’ll stand strong when your 50-page report suddenly gets corrupt. That’s adversity that meets you victorious. If you already know the importance of building relationships with your partners and are acting on it, you’ll come out strong when someone tries to tarnish your integrity.
Most times to build strength in adversity, we fall the first few times. This is what informs our brain to be on guard, should such a similar event happen again. But it becomes a problem when we always fall for the same event. For this, we need to rely on strength higher than ours to win. Christ already encourages us that His grace is sufficient for us.
Are you ready to face adversity like a man on a mission? Feed yourself correctly so that you build the strength you need to win.
