“It really is senseless to work so hard from early morning till late at night, toiling to make a living for fear of not having enough. God can provide for his devoted lovers even while they sleep!” Psalms 127:2 TPT
Our work culture goes against anything that gives us permission to rest. It’s like rest is a taboo if you have a dream to achieve.
For a long time, I felt proud talking about how I’d sleep for 3 hours, and work non-stop for the rest of the day. After all, I had very limited responsibilities on my shoulders at the time.
To me, everyone who slept for long hours just wasn’t going to make it in life.
Growing up, we called my younger brother “Sleep Commissioner” because he never joked about his 8 hours of sleep and midday naps.
Now, over 20 years later, with 7 to 8 figures to his name, a worn-out passport, a successful tech career and lots of sponsored vacations, he’s still the “Sleep Commissioner”.
With his example, and many others I have come in contact with, it makes me question the whole “work till you drop” mentality.
We grind for different reasons, but for the most part, we’re usually just busy, not productive.
“It’s not how long you sleep. It’s what you do when you’re awake.” – Gary Vaynerchuk
How do you maximize your day so you do work that counts?
1. Rise Early, Sleep Early
“It really is senseless to work so hard from early morning till late at night…”
Going to bed early isn’t an easy task when you’re so used to working and sleeping late. But trying it a few times will allow you experience the benefits.
2. Redefine Your Why
“…toiling to make a living…”
- Why do you wake up every morning to work?
- Why do you do what you do?
- Why are you so committed to working long hours at the expense of other important aspects of your life?
Understanding why we work helps us redefine if we’re at the right place or doing the right thing. Self-reflection is a good rest mechanism that helps put us back on the right track.
Doing work that aligns with your purpose and that’s led by the Spirit moves you from the realm of toiling, so you can cast your net on the right side of the boat and catch plenty.
3. Know The Source of Your Wealth
“…fear of not having enough…”
Fear is never a good motivating factor, especially when it comes to making money, which is another questionable motivating factor.
Working with the mentality of scarcity dims your sight from spotting opportunities that could lead to abundance.
God owns the cattle on a thousand hills. There’s enough to go round.
4. Get Time and Money to Work For You
“…God can provide for his devoted lovers even while they sleep!”
Companies run even when the CEO is on vacation. How? Because his time has been multiplied by the number of employees he has and the automation that has been set up.
Investments give you an opportunity to earn while you sleep. How? Because your money goes into the trenches to multiply itself so you have dividends and interest. This works for both physical (stocks, bonds, real estate, crypto) and spiritual (Tithes, seeds, donations) investments.
Work smarter by not eating everything you make, but research and leverage opportunities to multiply your time and money. Building this a few hours a week makes things better.
I believe the points in this post are the foundation of what your morning (and evening) routines will look like, and what tasks you’ll put on your to-do lists. When you deal with the roots of unproductivity, the right branches will sprout.
