“But he who had received one went and dug in the ground and hid his Lord’s money.” Matthew 25:18
Just like the servant in this verse, many of us are blessed with talents and capabilities, but we often don’t recognise or acknowledge them. Instead of using these God-given resources to fulfil our purpose, we conceal them, hiding them from others and even from ourselves.
We need to realise that the gifts we have were not originally ours. They are meant to be used to fulfil the purpose that God has in mind for us. When we choose to hide or ignore our gifts, we are not only doing ourselves a disservice but also missing the opportunity to contribute to the world in a meaningful way.
The servant in the story also went on a journey, just like the other two servants, who traded their talents for more. However, his intent with the resources he received was different. Instead of working and trading with them, he chose to bury them in the ground. This illustrates the effort it takes to not do something or to do something the wrong way.
How do we hide our gifts even while we work?
I can relate to this struggle in my own life. Many times, I’ve felt drawn to a particular project or goal, yet I’ve allowed self-doubt to lead me into pursuing other endeavours that I knew deep down were not right for me. I’ve wasted time and energy on the wrong things, only to realise that the calling I had been avoiding still remained unfulfilled.
Inaction doesn’t always mean doing nothing. It can also manifest as focusing on the wrong things, denying our true passion, and diverting our efforts and resources into activities that we know are not aligned with our purpose. This kind of inaction ultimately leads to a sense of unfulfillment and a realisation that time has passed without progress.
The truth is, as time goes on, our strength and energy will diminish. What we could have carried out with vitality in the past becomes more challenging as we age. We don’t have to start grand or complicated. Even small, minimalistic steps in the right direction can lead to a daily sense of fulfilment.
“I overcome inertia by working on the right things.”
It’s important to assess our current activities and ensure that we are on the right path. We can seek guidance in prayer to receive the direction we need. By addressing the burdens and callings placed inside us, even in the smallest ways possible, we can start to make a meaningful impact.
So, are you working on the right things, or are you distracted? Take some time to assess your current activities, seek guidance, and trust that you will receive the direction you need to fulfil your purpose.
