Be Proactive By Doing More

“The master was furious…If you knew I was after the best, why did you do less than the least?…” Matthew 25:26 MSG

It’s better to not commit than to make one and do less than the least. That means meeting a standard that is already below expectations. I would like to imagine that if the servant refused the talent given to him, his life may have turned out differently. But the truth is, for us on earth, we did not get to choose the talents we came with. That means we already have an expectation to meet.

I believe one of the best ways to live a full life and make progress is to increase what we have at hand that we consider to be valuable. Not because we feel we would give an account later, but because we are curious enough to explore.

Many of us do not explore our entire being and decide to either secure what we have through zero improvements or just neglect the talent altogether. This is usually due to one of two reasons:

1. Comparison

It’s easy to say that one reason the third servant didn’t grow his talent was that he felt it was too insignificant compared to the others. We act this way sometimes. But the second servant was also given less than the first, yet he improved himself.

This just means that comparison deprives us. You may have fewer skills or resources than your friend, but it’s more about quality than quantity.

2. Poor Mindset

Our thoughts are limited to what we have been exposed to that we have allowed into our minds. Perhaps if the third servant knew better, he would do better. But he refused to attend investment seminars or read books on growth mindset like his counterparts.

What hit the third servant could have affected any of the other two if they failed to have the right mindset towards what was given to them. Aside from the skills you may have, be sure you are thinking as you should.

To do less than the least is to get a negative score below zero. It means what you have isn’t secured, and it deteriorates below its normal condition. No leader likes that, let alone God – the giver of gifts. Make yourself valuable by doing something extra.
