Be Guided By Your Internal Desires

“For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” I Samuel 16:7 NKJV

This post is more like a sequel to my previous post where I talked about how fear and faith can influence how you work.

Our external and internal desires for the future really determine whom we become in that future.

On the surface, many of us think we know why we work the way we do. So if I asked you why you work so hard, depending on your perspective on life, your answer might be, “to become an authority in my field”. This is the external desire that drives your accomplishments. But this rarely is the reason why.

Your internal desire on the other hand is the root cause. It’s that vulnerable part of our life that you never really share or want to think about. This is what drives your personal transformation.

I discovered the concept of these desires in the Expert Secrets book by Russell Brunson. I use this same method for people who want to start new passion projects so they identify their “why” and it works every time I use it.

To identify your internal desire, you just need to keep asking “why?”

Going back to our sample question, the answer was;

“To become an authority in my field.”

“Why?”

“So I can earn more money.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to provide a better life for my family.”

“Why?”

“Because I want my spouse and kids to have everything they would ever need, lacking nothing.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to be a good example to other dads.”

“Why?”

“Because I want my family to know that everything I do is for them.”

“Why?”

“Because I want them to be grateful to God for having me as their dad.”

There you have it – the internal desire. If we dig deeper we’ll see why you have this internal desire. Perhaps it’s a childhood experience or something you saw on TV, but that’s for another post.

When you use your internal desires as the fuel that helps you put in the work, you’d be surprised at the transformation your work will experience.

It will influence the values you’ll hold dear and the actions you won’t allow yourself to take as you grow on that path.
