“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 NKJV
Growing up, we would call ourselves “Soldiers of Christ,” singing songs like “Are you in the Lord’s army?” We would sing those songs with so much excitement and childlike innocence. After all, we had no worries in the world.
Then we become adults and wonder when we were enlisted into God’s army. We see trouble and flee. We receive instructions to do something and give reasons why it would not work. So much for being a soldier.
Joshua was in this same fix and had a huge responsibility on his shoulders. If he had run, God would have had to get someone else. This is why it was important for Joshua to feel empowered from the beginning of his assignment.
How do we stay strong and courageous when the world gives us every reason to be afraid?
God says we can only stay strong and courageous when we believe that He’s with us everywhere we go.
God knows that without Him, we may be perceived as weak and fearful. We will act as such and not receive the blessings that come with strength and courage.
So, He’s our joker card. We don’t just pull out this card when weakness wants to get a hold of us. It stays out so that we stay strong.
If you only run to God when the going gets tough, you’ll encounter some tough situations that will cause you to forget the right thing to do. So, He’s not the riffle we quickly cork when we sight an enemy. He’s the armour we have on 24/7.
“I choose to work daily with the confidence that God is with me.”.
We gain strength and courage when we show fear and anxiety. For God has not given us the spirit of fear (2 Tim 1:7), and anything He hasn’t given us isn’t ours to accept.
The first mountain always looks hard to climb, so hard that we can be tempted to hide in a cave midway. But once it is subdued, the next mountain will look like a plain.
