Imagine that in the middle of the day, as you work, you hear someone knock on your door. You decide not to open it because you’re not ready to entertain uninvited guests.
But then, 10 minutes later, the knocking continues and grows louder. Your next response would be to open the door to see who that is.
For prayer, Jesus asks us why we pray once about a thing and then stop. When it comes to God, we have this fast-food mentality that once we go to place an order, we’ll receive it instantly.
On the other hand, continuous prayer is not a call for us to just keep asking for what we want. Since prayer is communication, God also wants to tell us what He wants.
Remember that, like in any conversation, when only one person does the talking, the other person, who also wants to talk, gets bored and focuses on something else that’s important.
When you’re the only one doing the talking, you stop praying once you’re done talking. But when you’re eager to get feedback, you never stop praying. How does that work? You never stop praying because, throughout your day, your heart is tuned to listen when God speaks.
How can we experience the power of prayer with work?
Work needs resources, solutions, ideas, etc. Sometimes we are unable to get these things ourselves, so we run to God, asking for help.
Because the needs are imminent, we go with a needy attitude and just want everything sorted. But if, before these needs arise, you’ve been making time to fellowship with God, you’ll approach this season differently.
Prayer changes us and helps us see time differently. Someone who sees God as an ATM believes that once he prays, God must give him what he wants immediately.
Someone who has learned to communicate with God through prayer and has seen how God works knows that when he asks for these needs, he also needs to ask for grace and strength to wait for the answers to manifest.
This person will show more gratitude for the waiting process than the first. Aside from the physical benefits we get through prayer, it also matures us. So, even though we may not physically have everything we need for the work ahead, we are confident that we currently have what it takes to do the work.
“Today, I choose to wait on God for these answers…”
The last thing God wants to do is spoil us. Instead, He works patience in us and prepares us for the answers. What requests do you need to be patient about today? Pray for strength.
