There is always a better and faster way to get things done.
I’m a fan of hacks and shortcuts, not for life generally but for tasks that could possibly take forever to get done.
In the world of tech, there’s always a tool or method that will cut implementation time in half. I never hesitate to find and use them. A simple Google search almost always does the trick.
This also applies to whatever it is you hope to accomplish. Some career paths could be shorter if only you knew the right person to speak to. Some projects would be more profitable if only you partnered with the right person early on.
This is why it’s very important to identify the knowledge you need in order to get to your destination.
Two Types of Knowledge
When helping people internally validate their ideas, there are two types of knowledge they must outline.
1. Internal Knowledge
This refers to the knowledge you already have. For example, you want to start a real estate business selling apartments as an affiliate and getting a commission on each sale. This is something you’ve never done before.
At the moment, you probably know all the property companies in your area, the cost of the apartments, the type of customer to target and some marketing know-how.
With this little knowledge, so many people get started and really struggle along the way because the second type of knowledge is missing.
2. External Knowledge
This is the knowledge you need to acquire. And it can be acquired in different ways.
For such a wide industry, there are so many areas that would influence your success in that new venture. For example, knowing the right property documents to have, differentiating fake from original documents, doing property tours (it’s a skill), etc.
You may assume that knowing and doing everything is the way to go. But sometimes, admitting you’re open to learning could mean partnering with or hiring expertise. A know-it-all doesn’t need help. But a learner does. You can have decades of experience in a field and still have the mindset of a learner
Getting the help you need as a learner can take a while, but identifying the knowledge you don’t have from the very beginning and also where to get that knowledge helps you realise that a lot more is required to succeed in what you do.
The Vision ahead is bigger than you and for a period of time, you’ll succeed doing everything yourself. But eventually, you’ll get to a point that demands new knowledge you don’t have in order to break through. If you’re unable to sense this and act accordingly by acquiring this new knowledge, you’ll place a lid on your growth.
