“Then Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn.”” Exodus 3:3 NKJV
“Zipporah! Zipporah!!”, Moses screams as he runs into the house, tossing his staff to the far end of the room. “What is it?” Zipporah responds, startled at the loudness of her husband’s voice as she stands from the kitchen bench. “Guess what?” Moses continues, “I saw a bush today that burned with fire ever so brightly, and it wasn’t consumed!” He says as he tries to catch his breath, with an excitement he hasn’t had in 40 years. “Okay, just calm down. Come sit and tell me all about it,” Zipporah replies as she spots a sparkle in his eyes that she had never seen in all the years that they were married. This was new.
God never wastes His visions. He picks the right vision for the right person, in the right circumstance. And for Moses, a burning bush was just what he needed to prick his curiosity and reawaken the fire in him.
There is nothing more fascinating than seeing a man who discovers something to burn for. It doesn’t matter if he is as unrefined as a bush or in an environment he doesn’t fit in, the fire is there to burn brightly. But there are two facts to take note of.
1. Passion does not kill
Like fire, passion burns brightly, not hot. We’ve belittled the impact that passion has on the work we do because of several negative experiences. Those who lacked the structure and mentorship to direct their passions the right way have taught us that passion is bad. We follow their advice and when everything we care about seems to get consumed, we give up and become naysayers ourselves.
Channelled correctly, it has a staying power that keeps it burning without consuming the carrier or those who gather around to behold it.
2. Passion moves you further on your journey
Out of gas? No problem. Just stop by the nearest filling station to get more fuel and you’ll continue driving. But even the fuel you get doesn’t just burn haphazardly in your car. There is an engine perfectly created to convert that fuel into what will move you forward.
Yes, you have passion, but how does it burn? If Moses went in the might of the burning bush, without all the structure that God put in place, even the people he was sent to deliver will advise him to leave Egypt and never return.
Don’t be like the man who starts something without first outlining what it will cost just because he has a vision of the future that is so big for him to capture. Take some time to understand the instructions within which that passion will function, whether that be a day, a week or as long as is required. And when possible, get a guide, as Moses had.
