“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
We all have weaknesses that we wish did not exist. Those areas of our lives where we fall short and struggle to keep up. Motivational speakers and positive thinkers often encourage us to turn these weaknesses into strengths. For a long time, I believed this to be the way forward. I started trying to turn my weaknesses into strengths, only to realise that it didn’t quite make sense.
Instead of focusing so much on turning my weaknesses into strengths, what if I simply strengthened my existing strengths? Just because something is considered a strength, doesn’t mean it can’t be further enhanced.
In any union or partnership, whether it be marriage or friendship, the weaknesses of one can be hidden within the strengths of the other. Similarly, the strengths of one can cover the weaknesses of the other. It’s a beautiful balance where each party’s strengths come into play, overshadowing their weaknesses. It’s in such partnerships that we witness the strengths shining through, making weaknesses almost invisible.
For our relationship with God, I believe it’s not solely our responsibility to strive to turn our weaknesses into strengths. Rather, we should present our strengths to God and allow His strength to shine through our weaknesses. Instead of trying to overcome our weaknesses through our might, we should seek God’s empowerment to work through them. It’s His strength that perfects our weaknesses, not our efforts.
Consider situations where we are weak and where we lack understanding or skill. In these moments, God empowers us. With His guidance, we can carry out tasks that seemed impossible due to our limitations. Success in these situations doesn’t come from our personal growth or improvement but from God’s strength working through us.
How does God’s strength perfect our weaknesses at work?
In my career, there have been numerous occasions when I’ve had tasks or projects that I didn’t possess the expertise to handle. A simple prayer for wisdom and guidance has often unlocked doors of creativity and insight that I couldn’t access on my own. It’s evident that God’s strength covers our weaknesses, and we need not strive to turn them into strengths using our power.
By acknowledging our reliance on God and inviting His intervention in our work, we can achieve better results. We recognise that it’s God’s strength that fills in the gaps, making the impossible achievable. We work from our strengths, acknowledging our weaknesses, and allowing God to work through them. This approach brings a sense of peace and confidence, knowing that we can achieve what God intends for us to do.
I choose to let God’s strength work through me.
Focus on your strengths and present your weaknesses to God. Working from your strengths allows you to deliver results with confidence and ability.
So, let’s not waste time trying to convert our weaknesses into strengths. Allowing God to walk through our weaknesses builds trust in Him and reinforces our belief in His ability to work through our limitations.
